Nara Park was improved as a park in 1880 (13th year of Meiji) based on the declaration issued by the National Cabinet. It was designated as a national place noted for scenic beauty by the national government in 1922 (11th year of Taisho). The official name of Nara Park is the "Nara Prefectural Urban Park - Nara Park." Nara Park is dotted with various temples and shrines including the Todaiji Temple, the Kofukuji Temple, and the Kasuga Taisha Shrine with a total area of 660 ha.



The main attraction of this park is the deer. The deer in Nara have been deified and strictly protected as a messengers of deities of the Kasuga Taisha Shrine. There are about 1,200 deer living in Nara Park. No matter where you go in the park, you will always see the deer playing with the tourists. This is a typical scene in Nara.
