Nara-machi reminds you of streets lined with neat rows of stores and houses of the medieval and early modern periods. Most of the Gengoji Temple was burned down in the third year of the Hotoku Era (1451), and stores and houses were developed in the precincts. The fabrics of hemp produced in Nara-machi called the "Nara Bleached Cloth" were purchased by the government and shipped all over Japan after the Edo period. The "Sacrifice Monkies" which is one of the people's objects of worship are hung out under the eaves of the tradesman's house in the alley.
