![]() Yoshino's Kawakami Village records show that tree planting started around the year of 1500, and that a large amount of lumber was being transported by the end of the 16th century. Advancing techniques of manufacturing lumber in the Edo period (1600-1868) helped expand sales channels, making the industry more intensive. It was also during that period that non-resident owners started appointing forest rangers from amongst the villagers, and some began forestry businesses on leased land. Around the Meiji Restoration in 1868, people cut down trees recklessly in other parts of the country, but here, they made sure to re-plant trees, expanding man-made forests of Japanese cedars and cypresses. Today, the "Yoshino Sugi" brand is the mark of quality construction materials. ![]()
