How to Use Bus Services

Nara has a highly developed bus service network crisscrossing the city. The bus service (Nara Kotsu) is an intrinsic part of the daily life of both residents and visitors to Nara. Long distance bus services are used by business and sightseeing travelers coming in and out of Nara, whereas sightseeing buses are often seen in various sightseeing spots for package tourists.

1) Boarding the Bus
There are two types of busses in Nara. One type allows passengers to board at the front of the bus and disembark at the rear. On this type of bus the fare is fixed and passengers pay their fare when they board the bus. On the other type, passengers take a numbered ticket as they board at the back of the bus, then pay the fare according to the number on the ticket as they get off at the front of the bus. The fare is indicated on display panel above the driver.

2) Disembarking from Bus
When the next stop is announced, push the nearest button attached either to the ceiling, or near the window, etc. to stop the bus.

3) Fare payment
Put your fare into the fare box situated next to the driver's seat. Buses normally accept small coins only. A 1,000 yen note can be exchanged for small coins at the change machine which is combined with the fare box. Try to have small change ready before you use the bus.
