Kumano Sankei Michi Kohechi path crosses over the Hatenashi Mountain Range (1,050m above sea-level) starting from Totsukawa Onsen Hot Spring, and has a total length of 12.5km. This was one of the many paths where Shugenja, or mountain ascetics trained themselves. Along the path are stone Buddhist images set on the moss-covered stone steps, creating a solemn, mysterious atmosphere. The route is included in the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range registered as a world heritage site.
