Japanese bush clover

Established
in 747 A.D., Shin-Yakushiji Temple was, according to old records,
hit by thunder and fire and the pavilions and halls were all
lost to the resulting fire except for the Main Hall. Shin-Yakushiji
is famous for Japanese bush clover. In the Main Hall, a 190cm
high statue of 'Yakushi Nyorai,' or the divine protector against
illness, the main image of worship, is surrounded by twelve
guardians called Juni Shinsho, protecting the Nyorai, and
notable for their fearsome facial expressions.

A
walking course extending approx. 500m from the second Torii
gate of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Natural Japanese andromeda flourishes
along the lane. In mid-March, beautiful white flowers similar
to bell lilies, greet visitors. At the end of the lane is
the 'former residence of Naoya Shiga,' a famous 20th century
novelist. The residence was designed by Naoya Shiga himself.

A grass-covered
hill famous for the Grass-Burning Ceremony |

This
grass-covered hill rises 342m above sea level and is most
popular with visitors in spring and fall. A walking course
and the Shin Wakakusayama Drive Way lead to the hill top.
On the night before the Coming of Age Day (second Monday in
January) , the mountain is set alight, giving a spectacular
view of the mountain burning in the winter night.

Yagyu Kaido (Takisaka no Michi) |

A natural stone-paved
path |

A
natural path opened as a short cut from the village home of
the Yagyu family, famous as teachers of swordsmanship, to
the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 17th century, to the center
of Nara. This small road through the mountains, is approx.
17km in length, and still retains its original stone-paving
in many parts. Along the path are stone figures of Buddha
such as 'Yuhi Kannon', 'Jigokudani Sekkutsu Butsu', and '
Kubikiri Jizo'.
