Opened
in 1895, the Nara National Museum is one of the famous national
museums in Japan, equivalent to those in Tokyo and Kyoto,
and displays a large collection of Buddhist art. The Museum
is also famous for Buddhist research and study. It hosts the
'Exhibition of Shoso-in Repository' every fall.
Volunteer Museum guides are available in the exhibition hall
to explain the items on display, four times a day (at 10:00,
11:00, 14:00 and 15:00). Each tour takes 30 minutes and is
free of charge.

Opened
in 1972, the Museum holds a donated collection of arts from
the Edo Period (17th century) through to the present. The
collection of approx. 4,200 items includes Ukiyo-e by such
famous artists of the Edo Period as 'Toshusai Sharaku', 'Kitagawa
Utamaro' and 'Katsushika Hokusai, as well as other paintings
and sculptures closely related to Nara Prefecture. A special
exhibition is held in spring and winter.
